The end of a sombre year. So many deaths: artists who were part of the fabric of the late 20th century, but also thousands in war, bombed to oblivion in their own country, drowning in the wine dark water, often greeted with hatred and derision if they finally make it to Western Europe or North America. Our fragile planet is in the hands of those who do not care about her. 2016 has seen the worst of our nature, and seems to mark the start of a New Order. It is tempting to collapse into despair and cynicism. I hope that the symbolism of the death of the old year will energise us to keep our faith in our constitutions and legal systems and to fight for the return of the light.
I would like to thank all the talented writers and artists who have contributed to Modern Salt since its inception just over a year ago, your enthusiasm and energy have propelled us along at a fair lick. Thank you to everyone who follows our newsletter and our tweets. And, on the home front, thank you to Peter Lane, Livia Movilescu and Matt Gibbs, without whom I would struggle.
We wish you all a peaceful and happy Christmas.
