Kurt Michael Friese

Born and raised in the American Heartland, Kurt Michael Friese has 37 years of professional foodservice experience.

He is chef and co-owner of Devotay, in Iowa City

The restaurant is a community leader in sustainable cuisine, supporting local farmers and food artisans.

In 2006 Friese founded and still publishes Edible Iowa magazine, a member of the James Beard Award-winning Edible Communities family of publications.

Friese also has served on the boards of directors of Slow Food USAThe Iowa Food Systems Council, and the NewBo City Market. His columns and photos on food, wine and travel have appeared regularly in local, regional and national newspapers and magazines. His first book, A Cook’s Journey: Slow Food in the Heartland, was published in 2008 by Ice Cube Press.  His most recent book, Chasing Chiles: Hot Spots Along the Pepper Trail, was published in 2011 by Chelsea Green.
